MISSION STATEMENT

Graduates will thrive as effective and confident clinicians and leaders in the community health setting, thereby expanding access, improving delivery, and elevating the quality of care for all.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

The Upham’s Community Care Family Nurse Practitioner Residency Training Program is a two-year, full-time residency training program for new graduate nurse practitioners to transition into clinic practice in a structured and supportive environment. This program will include the following:

Year 1

Year 1: Mentored Residency Year

October 2026 – September 2027
  • Weekly precepted and mentored primary care clinic sessions. Residents will have a dedicated attending primary care provider with them for full time support while seeing patients. Residents will move through an extended patient ramp up to allow additional time for the building of clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Weekly didactic sessions on high-yield primary care topics to expand provider knowledge and improve clinical skills. Residents will participate in weekly structured learning sessions to enrich their primary care practice.
  • Direct and consistent feedback between residents and preceptors. Residents will receive structured feedback from their preceptors and program staff as they develop clinical skills in a supportive environment. Residents will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on their preceptors.
  • Specialty rotations to bolster clinical knowledge. Residents will partake in specialty rotations to bolster knowledge for utilization in their family practice. Sample rotations include: Women’s Health, Urgent Care, Pediatrics, Pulmonology, ect.

Year 2

Year 2: Supported Transition to Practice Year

October 2027 – September 2028
  • Extended ramp up to full time. Residents will participate in an extended ramp up to reach full time provider status at a comfortable pace to avoid overwhelm and burnout. This will allow residents to slowly increase their session limits as they build their patient panels and encourage clinical confidence for new providers.
  • Mentored time with residency staff for additional clinical support. This will provide residents with a dedicated space for clinical questions and ongoing support in early practice.
  • Additional administrative time and support from senior clinicians.
  • Opportunity to provide mentoring to future first year residents. Residents may be offered mentorship opportunities in their second year to current first year residents as a way of building comradery and practicing their new skills.
